Alt Button Mac

If you're a long-time Mac user transitioning to a Windows keyboard, the Windows key, which is equivalent to the Mac's Command key, may occupy the physical position of the Option key on a Mac keyboard. Likewise, the Windows keyboard's Alt key is where you expect to find the Mac's Command key.

Pressing the ALT key at startup won't invoke the Bootcamp boot screen/menu.I'm stumped.
I'm using Bootcamp (ver. 3.x) on a new mac mini with Snow Leopard & Windows 7. I have all software updates applied and all necessary drivers installed in Windows.
I am using the Logitech USB keyboard that I've been using with my PC. Is that the problem? The ALT key on a PC keyboard should map to the ALT/Option key for the mac (to the best of my knowledge).
So, as a workaround I have to resort to choosing my startup OS via 'startup system' and 'Startup Disk' in WIndows 7 and Snow Leopard respectively. I'd like to get the boot menu working via the ALT key so I can switch to any OS right when starting up. I should add that I have seen this work successfully on another machine where I helped a friend install Windows via Bootcamp on their MacBook Air; so I am familiar with this process for the most part.
One last thing: I did see that another person on the forum had this problem, but in their case it seemed that their ALT key was working at first then at some point stopped. The advice was to do a PRAM-reset which they did and it fixed the problem. I actually tried that as well and that didn't solve my problem.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

  1. When running Windows on your Mac via Boot Camp, the keyboard mappings are changed so they make more sense in Windows. The Option key functions as Alt and the Command key functions as the Windows key. This can be a bit confusing when going back and forth between OS X and Windows.
  2. Now in windows I was very much used to Alt key based shortcut functions that use to help me in navigating the ribbon specially in Excel. For example Alt+H+W use to wrap the text in the cell column of Excel on PC, Alt+H+B+A will put a border on all sides of the cell. In the same way I can use all commands of Excel without even touching my mouse.

The one thing I missed most when going Mac was the gaming hardware. I LOVED my G15 keyboard, but since I tossed my Windows system out, I sold that keyboard and started using an Apple Wired Keyboard for my Mac when I was home.
But now Logitech has given the G15 Mac Support. It's still in Beta, but it looks promising.
On my MBP, I have a Boot Camp Setup with Vista. The concern I have is that to enter the OS selection screen, I need to hold down the Option key. On a Windows Keyboard, does the 'Alt' key takes its place? or will it not recognize it at all if I hold down the Alt key?
I'm only asking because I don't have a USB Windows keyboard to test it, and if I was to rebuy a G15 keyboard, I need to know that it works in both Windows, Mac, but more importantly, Boot Camp.

Windows vs Mac—there are so many differences. A lot of our customers have used a PC before and then decide they want to switch to Mac for better performance, nicer design, or for better security. However, they were afraid they would have a hard time getting used to the macOS keyboard. We hear questions like, 'How can I close a Window? The Mac keyboard doesn't have the Alt + F4 shortcut.' We always give them two answers:

The PC-keyboard equivalent of Alt on a Mac is called the Option key, and you'll find the Option Key on your Mac if you go two keys to the left of the spacebar. However, the option key on a Mac keyboard is used in a different way than the alt key on a Windows PC. In terms of functionality, the alt key in Windows is often more comparable with the Command key than with the Option key on a Mac.
